He sure didn't skirt this topic. (Okay, sorry)
Will Smith sat down for a super friendly interview, and around the 3 minute mark, the topic turns to his son, model and social tweeting virtuoso Jaden Smith, and whether Will consciously encourages freedom of expression in his children.
He does begin his answer with a joking: "Yeah, I think it may have been a mistake. I think we may have gone too far," which is super awkward ... but also such typical parental humor. Like, how many times has a parent said "our child started talking at such-and-such age and they haven't stopped since."
That hasn't stopped some people from latching onto that line since, out of context, it sounds like he's throwing his kid under the bus.
But then he gives his real answer, and it's clear that he couldn't be prouder. You know, we're not really the most trusting, especially when it comes to parents -- you're putting someone's entire life in people's hands, you know? But we really do trust Will and Jada.
"You know, there's a really powerful internal quality as an artist that, as parents, we encourage. You gotta get out on the edge, you have to try things, you have to be comfortable doing things that people don't agree with and you have to be comfortable doing things that you could fail."
That's a little wordy, but a good message. And then he talks directly about Jaden, and he has nothing but praise.
"And Jaden is 100 percent fearless, he will do anything, you know? So as a parent it's scary, it's really terrifying, but he is completely willing to live and die by his own artistic decisions and he just doesn't concern himself with what people think."
You can just hear the pride in Will's voice. And with good reason, because Jaden's working in a major ad campaign, he's a role model, he's breaking barriers for everyone, and he has a great sense of style.
